Check the Forecast and Watch the Weather: Listen
to the radio or TV for watches and warnings. The National Weather
Service issues Flood Watches when heavy rain is occurring or is
expected to cause flooding soon. Flood Warnings are issued when
flooding is a danger right now.
When Driving: Do not drive into areas where the water
is above your knees. Swiftly flowing water only 18 inches (.46 meters)
deep can wash any car away. Also, the roadbed may have broken up
under the water. If caught in rising water, abandon the car and
move to higher ground.
Outdoors: Do not attempt to cross even a small stream,
on foot and do not play or swim in flood waters, particularly in
irrigation ditches, storm drains, or intersections. Keep away from
downed power lines. Have a battery-operated NOAA weather radio or
other radio handy to get weather information. Don't camp near rivers
or streams if the forecast is for rain. If caught in rising water,
move to higher ground. Never camp in dry creek beds.
