What is BSTARS?
BSTARS is a teacher professional development program funded by the National Science Foundation and based at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder. Its goals are to provide teachers in grades 6 – 12 who reach large populations of Spanish speaking or Spanish-English bilingual students with opportunities to enhance their knowledge of the geosciences (Earth, weather, climate, and Sun-Earth connection sciences) and to raise awareness of students and their families of exciting careers in these fields.
Teachers need not be bilingual in order to participate in BSTARS.
The BSTARS program for the 2007-2008 academic year offers a Professional Development Course and a Family Learning Fair.
- A Professional Development Course on Earth, Climate, and Global Change Sciences will include:
Together, these course elements will provide teachers with training in using NCAR’s bilingual science education resources that enhance knowledge of the geosciences (Earth system, weather, and climate sciences and technology).
You may elect to take the course with or without the credit. See the Syllabus for more information about this course.
- The BSTARS Family Learning Fair at the NCAR Mesa Lab on May 10. BSTARS participants and their students and families will join us on Saturday, May 10, at NCAR for a festive Family Science Learning Fair. This event welcomes all ages in the Spanish speaking and bilingual community involved in the BSTARS program. It provides an opportunity to:
- showcase MESA, Science Fair, and other student learning projects
- recognize students and educators for their academic efforts
- inform and excite families’ interest in and appreciation of geoscience research and careers.
How Can You Participate?
An online application to participate in BSTARS must be submitted by November 14. Accepted participants will be notified by November 16. The BSTARS program has a very limited amount of support to cover substitute pay for teachers who cannot cover this from other sources (see Application Form).
