About Us

BSTARS is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences Program to the Office of Education and Outreach at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Partners in the effort ensure that scientists, educators, students, their families, and the broader Spanish speaking community are connected through this science education initiative.

  • National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and UCAR are dedicated to conducting scientific research contributing to understanding our changing Earth system,  educating students and the public about the atmosphere and related sciences,  supporting a global community of researchers, and benefiting society through science and technology. UCAR’s Office of Education and Outreach is coordinating BSTARS events and activities, as well as developing and facilitating the professional development course. Spanish language resources may be accessed on the Windows to the Universe web site.

  • Colorado MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) provides access to bilingual teachers who engage minority students in grade 6 – 12 after school programs. These teachers/advosprs contribute expertise and successful methods for motivating diverse students and engage their parents in ways to study hard, aspire to attend college, and succeed in STEM disciplines.

  • The Colorado Department of Education’s Immigrant Education Program’s is helping recruit teachers in schools with large populations of Spanish speaking students to participate in BSTARS events and professional course. The program’s regional directors are highly informed about how to align this effort with multicultural communities, content assessment goals, and district level curricula that shape priorities in Colorado’s K-12 education system.

  • Univision Spanish language television programs will document workshops in which teachers gain hands-on experience with UCAR’s bilingual science education resources, science classroom activities in which teachers use the resources with their students, and students’ science fair presentations to their parents and school community.
